♡ Sew to Donate

Sew with Purpose. Give with Love.

The 60 Patterns to Sew It Forward project was created to encourage sewists everywhere to use their talents to make a real difference in someone’s life.

As a nurse, I’ve seen firsthand how a simple handmade item can provide comfort during difficult times. Whether it’s a child receiving treatment, someone recovering from surgery, a nursing home resident, or a family remembering a loved one, every stitch has the power to show kindness.

You don’t have to sew all 60 patterns. Start with one. Make one item. Brighten one person’s day. Together, those small acts of kindness create something much bigger.

What “Sew It Forward” Means

Sew It Forward means using your sewing skills to make practical, thoughtful items that can be donated to people and organizations in need.

You can:

  • ❤️ Sew one item to donate.
  • ❤️ Make several for a local organization.
  • ❤️ Organize a sewing group.
  • ❤️ Teach others to sew and donate together.
  • ❤️ Make gifts for friends, family, neighbors, and caregivers.

Every handmade gift is a reminder that someone cares.

How to Choose a Sewing Project

Not sure where to start? Think about who you’d like to help.

Choose a project based on the people or organizations you want to support:

  • Hospitals & Healthcare – Patient comfort items, scrub caps, patient gowns, walker caddies, and more.
  • Surgery & Recovery – Port pillows, mastectomy pillows, recovery pillows, heating pads, drain holders, and other recovery aids.
  • Cancer Care & Chemo Support – Comfort items designed for those undergoing treatment.
  • Nursing Homes & Assisted Living – Fidget blankets, wheelchair accessories, adult bibs, tissue holders, and comfort gifts.
  • NICU, Baby & Bereavement – Angel gowns, preemie blankets, memory keepsakes, and baby comfort items.
  • Memory Plush & Keepsakes – Memory animals, memory quilts, and keepsakes made from a loved one’s clothing.
  • Caregiver Essentials – Practical projects that support nurses, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

Before You Donate

Every organization has different needs.

Before you begin sewing, contact the organization you’d like to donate to and ask:

  • Which handmade items are currently accepted?
  • Are there preferred sizes or styles?
  • Are there specific fabric requirements?
  • Are there any restrictions or safety guidelines?
  • Are there times of year when donations are most helpful?

Many organizations are happy to share a current wish list.

Fabric, Cleanliness & Safety Tips

To help ensure your donation can be accepted:

  • Use new, clean, high-quality fabric whenever possible.
  • Wash your hands before handling fabrics and finished items.
  • Sew in a smoke-free environment whenever possible.
  • Avoid strong perfumes or scented products on finished items.
  • Trim loose threads and inspect your work carefully.
  • Make sure seams are secure and items are free of pins or sharp objects.
  • Follow any safety recommendations included with each pattern.
  • Use only materials that are appropriate for the intended recipient.

Packaging Your Donation

A beautiful presentation makes your handmade gift even more special.

Consider including:

  • A “Handmade with Love” tag
  • Care instructions
  • A short note of encouragement
  • A gift bag or ribbon
  • Your first name or sewing group (optional)

Small touches can mean a great deal to the person receiving your gift.
