How to Sew an Easy Fabric Lanyard: A Beginner-Friendly Project You’ll Actually Use

Today, I’m excited to share one of my favorite quick projects - a fabric lanyard. It’s practical, beginner-friendly, and one of those projects you’ll find yourself making again and again. 

One of my favorite things about this pattern is how often my family uses it. The pattern comes in adult and children's sizes. Between school events, keys, theme parks, and even cruises, we’ve always had a reason to grab a fabric lanyard. I wanted to create a pattern that was simple enough for beginners but polished enough that you’d be proud to wear it every day.

If someone asked me which project I recommend for a brand-new sewist, a fabric lanyard would be high on the list.

By the time you’re finished, you’ll have practiced sewing straight seams, pressing for professional results, turning fabric tubes, topstitching, and attaching hardware.

Common Beginner Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Every sewist has been there—including me!

Here are a few tips that will help your finished lanyard look beautiful.

Take your time when pressing.
A well-pressed project always looks more professional.

Slow down while topstitching.
It’s tempting to sew quickly, but slower stitching creates cleaner lines.

Use clips or pins generously.
Keeping everything aligned makes a big difference.

Practice on scraps first.
If you’re nervous, test your stitch length before sewing your actual project.

Remember…

Progress is always more important than perfection.

Every project teaches you something new.
