🌺 Aloha! I’m Heather, the Sewing Pattern Designer behind Aloha Sewing Company.

A few weeks ago, I took you along with me as I traveled around the Big Island of Hawaii visiting some of my favorite fabric stores.

Of course, quite a bit of fabric came home with me.

But this time…

I actually cut into some of it!

I used several of those fabrics to sew a SENIOR fabric letter banner for my daughter’s Senior Jeans Painting Party, and I loved how it turned out. So much that it inspired an entirely new sewing pattern!

Today I’m showing you how to sew fabric letters, numbers and symbols that you can mix and match to create just about any custom banner you can think of.

Baby names. Birthdays. Graduations. Holidays. Nurseries. Classrooms. Sewing rooms. Party decorations.

You can sew ANY custom phrase you want.

And the best part?

This is a really fun, beginner-friendly sewing project!

Sew Your Own Fabric Letters, Numbers & Symbols

I designed this pattern to give you a LOT of options without making the sewing complicated.

What Can You Make With Fabric Letters?

This is where it gets fun.

• Class of 2027 graduation decorations
• First Day or Last Day of School banners
• Christmas, Halloween and Easter decor
• It’s a Boy or It’s a Girl baby shower banners
• First birthday high-chair banners
• Classroom decorations
• Sewing room signs
• Seasonal mantel decor
• Personalized handmade gifts

And that’s only the beginning.

Fabric & Supplies

This is a GREAT scrap-busting project because you don’t need much fabric for each letter.

I recommend woven cotton fabrics, such as quilting cotton. They’re easy to sew, easy to cut and available in just about every color and print imaginable.

Coordinate all of your letters…

Or don’t!

Mix florals, stripes, dots, Hawaiian prints, holiday fabrics and solids.

Sometimes the mismatched ones are my favorite.

For this project you’ll need:

• Printable Fabric Letters PDF Sewing Pattern
• Fabric scraps or quilting cotton
• Quilt batting, thin felt or interfacing
• Coordinating thread
• Sewing machine
• Fabric scissors
• Pins or sewing clips
• Ribbon, cord or twine

You can also use pinking shears, scalloped pinking shears and mini clothespins depending on how you’d like your finished letters to look.

How to Sew Fabric Letters

Start by printing the letter, number or shape you want to make.

Choose either the 4-inch or 6-inch size, depending on your project. Cut your fabric and pattern piece out, and choose your fabrics. You need 1 for the front, 1 for the back, and optionally - one for the middle.

For the middle layer, I use quilt batting.

It gives the letters just enough softness and structure without making them overly thick or puffy.

You can also use:

1. Quilt batting — what I use
2. Thin felt
3. Interfacing
4. Nothing at all

Once your layers are together, you’ll sew around your shape and cut around the outside of your stitching.

And if you’re a beginner, don’t let the curves and corners scare you.

Slow down, take your time and have fun with it.

This is actually a great project for practicing sewing around different shapes.

Straight, Zigzag or Scalloped Edges?

Here’s another way to make your letters completely your own.

You can cut them with:

✂️ Regular fabric scissors — simple straight edge
✂️ Pinking shears — classic zigzag edge
✂️ Scalloped pinking shears — sweet rounded scalloped edge

The scalloped edge is probably my favorite!

But you absolutely do not need special scissors for this project.

Use what you already have.

How to Hang Your Fabric Letters

Once your letters are finished, it’s time to turn them into a banner.

One option is to add small ribbon loops to the top of each letter.

Thread ribbon, twine or cord through the loops, then slide the letters around until you love the spacing.

Want an even easier option?

Use mini clothespins!

Clip your finished letters directly onto ribbon or cord.

I love this method because you can rearrange the letters, change your banner or reuse them later.

From Hawaii Fabric to a Senior Banner 🌺

This might be my favorite part of this project.

Some of the fabric I used for my daughter’s SENIOR banner came home with me from our recent trip around the Big Island of Hawaii.

I found it while visiting local fabric stores around the island. Then I brought it home and turned it into something for my daughter’s senior year. And I think that’s one of the things that makes sewing with special fabric so much fun.

Fabric can hold memories.

Fabric from a trip can become a banner for a milestone. A quilt for someone you love. A bag you use every day. Or a handmade gift that stays in your family - like a Happy Birthday banner you can sew for your family to traditionally use year after year.
